Voices from Fukushima: Say No to Nuclear Power
An Inter-religious conference on Nuclear Issues was held in Aizuwakamatsu, Japan on December 4-7, 2012 organized by the National Christian Council (NCC) in Japan in collaboration with other religious organizations in Japan. It was attended by 87 participants from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong - China SAR, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and the United States of America. An exposure program to the disaster hit site and the area affected by the Fukushima Daichi accident, and a study tour to Aizu Radiation Information Center was included in the agenda of the conference. The official opening was held on December 5 afternoon with words of welcome from Rev. Koichi Kobashi, the Moderator of the National Christian Council (NCCJ) in Japan, and Rev. Masahiro Nemoto, General Secretary of the Ressho Koseikai, a Buddhist organization in Japan.
CCA was represented by the General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Henriette Hutabarat Lebang. A few other members of the General Committee were present, representing their councils: Fr. Rex Reyes, the General Secretary of NCC Philippines and Rev. Po Kam Cheong the General Secretary of Hong Kong Christian Council. Rev. Hiroko Ueda, GC member from Japan, has been part of the organizing committee.
The conference adopted a document titled Declaration of Fukushima 2012: No to Nuclear Power! This document highlighted the discussions in the conference, and called on the religious communities and all people of good will to say: “No to Nuclear Power”, through words and deeds.
