People On The Move: Mission Roundtable

Programme Review and Programme Direction

Two key deliberative sessions during the 15th CCA General Assembly are the Programme Review and Programme Direction sessions.

The Programme Review and Programme Direction sessions will both be conducted in three groups relating to the CCA’s programme areas, namely, (i) General Secretariat (GS), (ii) Mission in Unity and Contextual Theology (MU) and Ecumenical Leadership Formation and Spirituality (EF); and (iii) Building Peace and Moving Beyond Conflicts (BP) and Prophetic Diakonia (PD).

Assembly participants will have the option to join one of three groups for both the Programme Review and Programme Direction sessions. For the sake of coherence, the assigned group will remain the same for both sessions.

General Secretariat

The General Secretariat oversees the coordination of programmatic, administrative, and financial activities of the organization. The GS comprises various departments such as church and ecumenical relations, relations with ecumenical partners, finance, administration, and communications, which provide crucial support and services for the implementation of programs and contribute to the overall functioning of the CCA.

    People on the Move
    Mission Round Table Meeting
    10 – 15 January 2014

A Mission Round Table Meeting focusing on “People on the Move in the Asia Pacific” was held in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand from 10-15 January 2014. Thirty-four participants from eleven Asian and Pacific countries gathered to reflect and discern the topic “People on the Move,” which focused on migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in the Asia-Pacific region.

Knowing that Asia is a place where many of the worlds’ 40 million displaced people can be found, the roundtable gathered to identify ways in which as churches- both from countries of origin and destination- we may effectively, sustainably, and responsibly respond to specific conditions of people on the move. Discernment was aided by listening to stories of people who have moved for various reasons, almost always looking for better opportunities, but largely frustrated when their dreams turn to exploitation, including trafficking and other forms of modern-day slavery.

The participants of the Mission Round Table considered the challenges and opportunities brought to them and voiced that adequate steps must be taken to inform people who are intending to move about the potential challenges and difficulties of their destinations. They called on churches to strive to create favorable, just, and sustainable conditions for citizens in their countries of origin so that they may opt to remain rather than to leave and migrate. It was the participants’ hope that as churches we can work together on every side to contribute to the mitigation of the suffering of people on the move and to ensure a better life for all.
