Earthquakes in Baluchistan, South West Province of Pakistan
We are shocked and grieved to hear of the strong earthquake that struck Pakistan's remote south-west province of Baluchistan on Tuesday, killing at least 515 people and injuring hundreds more; and the second quake on Saturday at Awaran, about 30 kms away from the previous tremor, measuring 6.8 in magnitude.
We are sad to hear that about 185,000 have been affected by the tremor and that tents and items like blankets, food packets, water, mosquito nets and other essentials are to be distributed to them. We are comforted that the Government has been able to distribute 11,800 tents to survivors, and that several medical teams are now operating in the area, but at the same time are deeply anxious to hear that rescue efforts have been hampered both by the remoteness of the area, and by attacks allegedly by rebels against army convoys carrying the aid.
We are with you in prayer and spirit and are certain that God will give you courage and strength to endure and overcome these troubled times.
