Earthquake in China
The Christian Conference of Asia is deeply distressed and saddened on hearing reports of the devastating 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit southern China's Yunnan province on Sunday afternoon, 3rd August 2014, resulting in the death of at least 398 people, and more than 1,800 injured.
About 12,000 homes collapsed when the quake struck the impoverished Ludian County, around 370 kilometers northeast of Yunnan's capital, Kunming. Described by local media as the strongest to hit Yunnan in 14 years, the quake caused significant structural damage and power outages in the city of Zhaotong, which was nearest to the epicenter.
Four aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 and higher, rain, thunderstorms and damaged roads complicated efforts to bring tents, water, food and other relief supplies to survivors. Rescuers were forced to travel on foot as the roads had caved in. The mountainous region where the quake occurred is prone to earthquakes and is largely agricultural, with farming and mining as the top industries.
Relief efforts are underway, with more than 2,500 troops dispatched to the disaster region. The Red Cross Society of China allocated quilts, jackets and tents for those made homeless by the quake, while Red Cross branches in Hong Kong, Macau and neighboring Sichuan province also sent relief supplies. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that lost their lives. May God’s comforting presence be with our brothers and sisters always.
