CCA prays for Japanese people as Typhoon Neoguri leaves a trail of devastation
The CCA family is shocked and sad at the reports of Typhoon Neoguri lashing Japanese mainland last week, bringing widespread flooding, ripping trees from their roots, leaving houses half-buried under mud, and causing tens of thousands to seek shelter. We are also distressed at the fact that it had earlier slammed into Japan's Okinawa island chain, bringing torrential rain and very strong winds that uprooted trees, tore down wooden buildings from their foundations and caused landslides in 35 locations. We are sorry to hear that this disrupted normal life, and caused power outages in nearly 70,000 Okinawan households.
We thank God that it skirted past the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant without causing much harm to the plant, thus preventing more serious consequences.
We are also worried at the 6.5-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan's northern coast on Saturday, 11 July 2014, not far from the site of the 2011 Fukushima disaster, triggering a small tsunami.
We can well imagine the enormity of loss and destruction in the affected places and the hardship that our brothers and sisters are experiencing. We sympathize with those who have been forced to move away from their homes, seeking shelter and protection. We pray that the comforting presence and spirit of the Lord will give them strength and fortitude to overcome these setbacks.
For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock. (Psalm 27:5 NRSV)
