CCA Mourns the Passing Away of Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela Passes Away
Christian Conference of Asia mourns the passing away of Nelson Mandela, the father of modern South Africa, and iconic leader of the anti-apartheid movement, on 5th December 2013, at the age of 95, after a long illness. We are thankful that his last hours were spent peacefully in the company of his family. In a statement on South African National TV, President Jacob Zuma said that Nelson Mandela, is “….now rested and is at peace. Our nation has lost its greatest son and our people have lost a father.”
Affectionately called Madiba, Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president who led the peaceful transition from a white-minority rule to democracy, spent 27 years in prison, and after his release was elected his country's first black president. He led the struggle against South Africa's apartheid regime over decades, winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
CCA pays homage to this great leader who is a powerful symbol of integrity, peace and perseverance, forgiveness and humility and meant so much to this generation. We grieve with his family, the people of South Africa and with everybody around the world. We grieve for Madiba, and at the same time commit ourselves to the great lessons that he left as legacy to the world- the lessons of Peace and Reconciliation, of humility, respect for everybody and moral integrity.
We have here a few quotes from this great man, which reflect his personality and immense sense of justice and fairness.
"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." -- from “Long Walk to Freedom”
"Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another ... The sun shall never set on so glorious a human achievement. Let freedom reign. God bless Africa!" – Inauguration speech, May 10, 1994.
"The time for the healing of the wounds has come. The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come. The time to build is upon us ... We enter into a covenant that we shall build a society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity - a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world." – Inauguration speech May 10 1994.
"Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul."
(From INVICTUS a poem that inspired Nelson Mandela while he was in prison)
