CCA condemns Palm Sunday church bombings in Egypt

Programme Review and Programme Direction

Two key deliberative sessions during the 15th CCA General Assembly are the Programme Review and Programme Direction sessions.

The Programme Review and Programme Direction sessions will both be conducted in three groups relating to the CCA’s programme areas, namely, (i) General Secretariat (GS), (ii) Mission in Unity and Contextual Theology (MU) and Ecumenical Leadership Formation and Spirituality (EF); and (iii) Building Peace and Moving Beyond Conflicts (BP) and Prophetic Diakonia (PD).

Assembly participants will have the option to join one of three groups for both the Programme Review and Programme Direction sessions. For the sake of coherence, the assigned group will remain the same for both sessions.

    coptic-cross-3

The Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) condemned the bomb attacks on two Coptic Orthodox churches in northern Egypt on Palm Sunday. The bomb explosions at the Saint George Church in Tanta and the Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria killed 47 worshipers and wounded at least 100 others.

Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria, who was leading the Palm Sunday service at the Saint Mark's Cathedral, was still in the building at the time of the explosion but was not harmed.

In a letter addressed to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, the CCA General Secretary, Dr. Mathews George Chunakara expressed deep distress over the loss of lives and offered prayers to the bereaved families and the wounded.

We are distressed by the ongoing sectarian persecution and violence against the minority Christians in the country. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Egypt and support every effort of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the Egyptian government and the international community to end the spate of attacks against innocent people, and work for communal harmony, tolerance and mutual respect,” the CCA General Secretary added.

Dr. Mathews George Chunakara stated that the CCA stands in solidarity with Egypt’s Coptic Christians who are yet again the target of violence.

The bombings on Palm Sunday are the latest in a series of attacks on Egypt’s Christian minority, who account for 10 per cent of the population in the country.
