Catholicos Emeritus H H Baselios Marthoma Didymos I passes away
CCA regrets to announce the passing away of His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Didymus I, Catholicos Emeritus of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (MOSC), on Monday 26 May 2014, due to age-related illness, at the St. Gregorios Medical Mission Hospital, Parumala, Kerala, India. He was 94. According to hospital sources, he breathed his last at 7.30 pm. The mortal remains of His Holiness is kept at Devalokam, the MOSC Headquarters, for people to pay their last respects.
Baselios Marthoma Didymos I was enthroned Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan (Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church) on October 31, 2005. He stepped down as the supreme head of the MOSC in 2010, due to ill health and was undergoing treatment for a while. His health condition reportedly deteriorated on Thursday evening.
He is the seventh Catholicos since the Catholicate of the East was relocated to India. He is also the 19th Malankara Metropolitan of the Church.
The contributions of His Holiness, to the Orthodox Church, ecumenism and society and his leadership will always be remembered and cherished. CCA shares the sorrow of our brothers and sisters of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and will continue to uphold His Holiness in our thoughts and prayers.
