EDITORS'
PREFACE
This issue of the CTC Bulletin contains the main papers presented
at the Founding Meeting of the Congress of Asian Theologians (CATS)
which took place at the Somang Academy House in Suwon, Korea, in May,
last year. The papers constitute the major component of Part II of
the Proceedings of the Congress. Part I of the Proceedings was published
in the last issue of the Bulletin.
The papers cover a wide variety of topics, e.g., issues of theological
methodology, hermeneutics and interpretation of texts, contextual
theology, ethics and society, religion and culture, Church and mission,
and various aspects of ecumenical life. They do not and were not meant
to form a particular theological orientation, certainly not a “theological
school.” They provide, on the contrary, a wide panorama of the
theological scene in Asia, and a “sense” of what the theological
mood might be. We are very glad to be able to share these with readers
of the CTC Bulletin.
Philip Wickeri, who served for many years as Overseas Coordinator
of Amity Foundation in Hongkong and who was one of the editors of
the last issue of the Bulletin, left Hongkong in January this
year to assume his new position as Professor of Mission at the San
Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, California, USA. Dhyanchand
Carr, who served sitice 1992 as Executive Secretary for Mission and
Evangelism and Theological Concerns of the Christian Conference of
Asia (CCA), also left Hongkong: in early June this year, to reassume
his position as a member of the faculty of Tamil Nadu Theological
Seminary in India. We thank both of these friends for their work with
the Bulletin and for their contribution to theological concerns
in Asia. We also wish them well in their new responsibilities and
areas of work.
I want to thank Janice Wickeri for assisting in editing and in preparing
the materials for publication, and Heddy Ha of the CCA Staff for putting
them in final form.
